Governor John Pope created Greene County in 1835. It was named after the Revolutionary War general Nathaniel Greene.

Paragould historical points of interest include the Statue of Liberty Memorial and the 1888 Greene County Courthouse.

In 1882 two railroads built their lines into the county and crossed at a point where a town would be built. One was the St Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad, later to be known as the Missouri Pacific, headed by the famous railroad magnate, Jay Gould. The other railroad was the Texas and St Louis, later called the Cotton Belt. J.W. Paramore served as president.

The name "Paragould" evolved by combining syllables from "Paramore" and "Gould." A truly original name for an unusual town!
